Cogeneration is a California success story. Unlike traditional power plants, cogeneration doesn't let heat and steam escape into the atmosphere. Instead, it captures what would normally be wasted energy and harnesses it for optimal efficiency.

More than 550 cogeneration plants currently operate throughout the state, providing two-thirds of all the non-utility power generated in California. With output of about 6,500 megawatts (MW) each year, California produces more cogen power than any other state.
